Lensless endoscope: Do we always need lenses? Is it possible to observe cellular structure and function through a hair-thin optical fiber?

Neuronal activity imaging is usually done on head-restrained mice under a table-top microscope. Nevertheless, capturing the entire width of neuronal structures is difficult and the depth even more so due to the opaqueness of brain tissue.
Miniaturized microscopes or endoscopes could offer new possibilities such as:
-Capturing deep structures from freely-moving mice by using a head-mounted endoscope.
-Capturing wider or deeper parts of structures by using microscope and endoscope simultaneously.
